What is therapeutic reflexology?
Reflexology is traditionally perceived as a “foot massage”, however the application of specific finger pressure techniques are used as a method for “activating the natural healing powers of the body”. As a science it requires careful study, practice, technical knowledge and skill.
How does it work?
The ears, hands and feet contain reflex areas that mirror the image of the body. Stimulation of these reflexes balance the nervous system by releasing chemicals, such as endorphins, that reduce pain or stress and promote self-healing.
What happens at a therapeutic treatment?
A therapeutic reflexology treatment is very relaxing. A typical treatment is 45 minutes to 60 minutes long and begins with a consultation about your health and lifestyle. You are then asked to remove your shoes and socks and sit comfortably on a massage bed. The feet, ears and hands will be assessed and then stimulated. Reflex sensitivity is interpreted by relating to stress and weaknesses within specific organs and corrected through stimulation or lifestyle adjustments. Oil or lotion is applied towards the end of the treatment together with massage techniques to promote deep relaxation.
How will I feel afterwards?
People feel relaxed, calm and even sleepy. Typical detox symptoms might be experienced as the body rids itself of toxins and activates its natural healing powers.
Precautions
Be sure to give the therapeutic reflexologist an accurate medical history. Consult your medical practitioner if you are pregnant, have any foot ulcers or have been diagnosed with thrombosis, phlebitis or epilepsy.
