The Pilates method of fitness is a series
of precise movements done on specifically designated pieces of apparatus
or mats to condition the whole body. The Pilates method
balances the body, utilizes the mind and breath to elongate the muscles
in the body also allowing and improving alignment, muscle function and control,
Pilates is the Art of Contrology.
In the mid-twenties German-born gymnast and physical pioneer Joseph H. Pilates brought this unique method of physical and mental conditioning to the United States. Joseph Pilates arrived in New York City with very specific ideas of physical fitness and rehabilitation following physical injury. In a British Internment Camp during World War 1, Pilates facilitated a physical and mental recovery program for patients while still on their backs. The idea developed into what Pilates called "Contrology". That name never stuck. However, the work and name of Joseph Pilates did, and seventy years later his techniques became the cornerstone of The New York Pilates Method.
Utilizing specialized apparatus, Pilates designed the method by toning muscles as well as balancing muscular force at the joint level. This stimulates circulation through facilitating muscular flexibility, joint range of motion and proper muscular-skeletal alignment. In addition, it promotes new neuro-muscular patterns, heightened body awareness and more precise co-ordination. All these things combine to help prevent future injury, reduce back pain, other joint or muscular pain, mental and physical stress altogether. When performed regularly the New York Pilates method positively changes bodies, minds and lives. Apart from strengthening your back, shrinking your waist line and increasing muscle flexibility, the Pilates method will build your self-confidence, boost your energy and improve your sex life!
It is recommended that your first Pilates session be a private one, that is, a one-on-one session with an instructor. This class will introduce you to the apparatus, give you an idea of where your body is in terms of strengths and weaknesses and allow you to formulate personal goals. After your first private session it will be up to you and your instructor to decide if you are ready to move into a duet or a semi-private (group) session or need to take a few more private sessions.
Those who have successfully mastered the method can take up the challenge of Power Pilates. The movements of Power Pilates are unlike anything you've ever done before, as the results will prove as well. The instructor will take you through a series of exercises and movements with an emphasis on your core musculature including stomach, back, buttocks, arms and legs. All movements promote strength and stability and increase the range of motion of the joints. What you can expect physically will be a total change in your body -your posture will improve and your stomach and buttocks will become more toned. Legs and arms will be leaner. Your energy level will improve dramatically and people around you will notice this in your appearance.
However, consistency is the key to change. Your approach should be to work out at least two to three times per week and as Joseph Pilates said: "in 10 sessions, you will feel the difference; in 20 you will see the difference; and in 30 you will have a whole new body."
